At an August 21 Press Conference in Rockville, Neighbors for a Better Montgomery restated their support of Hugh Bailey for an At-Large seat on the County Council, as part of their overall endorsement of a number of candidates for elected office that, they believe, will bring integrity, transparency and accountability back to County government. A group of Takoma Park and Silver Spring neighbors opposed to wasteful and costly projects like the ICC and in favor of campaign finance reform, affordable housing, a living wage, fairness in matters of race and gender, and environmental protection has sifted through the candidates for various offices, looking at more than just what is said in press releases and public forums. "Candidate Hugh Bailey, a 37-year-old from Gaithersburg who manages a workforce center in the county, was more charitable toward the slate members but offered similar criticism of their message. "I think that they're all good people," he said, "but the name of the slate is a misnomer at best. What we've got is growth without infrastructure and ... support for projects that have little ability to actually relieve congestion. It demonstrates that they haven't ended gridlock at all, they've contributed to it." "We see signs that say, 'Sick of traffic? Vote for Steve Silverman,'" Bailey continued. "I think that's an unfair characterization of what's happened over the last four years."
